Our Story: The business concept of our faith-based, non-profit care facility began in 1954 when a group of area ministers chooses to acquire a former motel in Campbell, MO to serve area residents with a unique kind of skilled nursing facility.
General Baptist Rest Home operated under that name until 1975 when it became General Baptist Nursing, Inc.
The 1970s saw much growth and progress as the home moved from 40 to 70 residents. Physical accommodations became the focus as we added an elevator, and finally air-conditioning almost coming through donations from the community as God surely blessed us through this time of significant needs. Many changes during this period were also required to maintain compliance with state regulations.
Finally, on May 7, 1977, in Campbell, MO, 70 residents had breakfast in the old facility and dinner that evening in their new home with all of their own room belongings. In 1980, a generous estate donation from Mrs. Virginia Skidmore afforded GBNH to expand the administrative offices and furnish the “Skidmore Conference Room.”
Thanks to subsequent estate donations and church donations, the facility was able to add the “Ward Chapel” which seats approximately 60 people, more residents’ rooms, opening our Activity Department to a larger area and, by 1993, converted one wing to an Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Unit.
In 1994, another estate donation provided for us a large Resident Lounge around the Nurses’ Station and another room for the Nursing Department. In 1997, a large donation from the sale of a partner church afforded us the ability to enlarge the Therapy Department along with new rooms for a Physician’s Treatment room and a Speech Therapy room.
In 1981, the Board purchased our facilities in Mt. Carmel, IL. In 1997, this name was changed to Oakview Heights Continuous Care and Rehabilitation Center. Among many improvements since this time includes a new Alzheimer’s Unit. We also have Oakview Villa, Assisted Living Center in Mt. Carmel, located next to each other.
In more recent years, General Baptist Health Care was established as the current operating Board. In the mid-2000s, the corporate office was established in Piggott, AR and we constructed Magnolia Manor Assisted Living Center in 2009 and acquired General Baptist Nursing Home of Piggott in 2012.
An exciting part of our growth has been adding all types of therapy at our locations on an inpatient and outpatient basis such as Physical, Occupational, Restorative, and Speech Therapy for the communities we serve. Not only does this better serve our residents by not having to be transported but local and area residents can receive their follow-up care in our facility instead of having to travel back to regional medical centers.
Most recently, in December 2017, we purchased General Baptist Nursing Home in Linn, MO and are adding a corporate branch office in Paragould, AR opened in April 2018.
Of all the gratitude we have to offer to our organization’s founders, leaders, workers and donors throughout our 60+ years of offering genuine care to families in a more personal, faith-based care as a ministry; none is greater than to God for blessing us in every step.
General Baptist Health Care offers a nursing home in Piggott, Arkansas to the aged and disabled believing in accordance with the Words of Jesus when he said “verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of my brethren, ye have done it unto me” in Matt 26:40.
